Freemasonry in Australian History

It is likely that others on board were also Freemasons, although no record of a Masonic meeting being conducted on Australian soil can be found before 1802. It was not until the following year that the first Australian organised meeting of Masonic Brethren took place, and it was under interesting circumstances: Sir Henry Browne Hayes –the Mason who partitioned to conduct the meeting, was in fact a convict.

New South Wales historically takes pride of place for establishing the first permanent Masonic Lodge in Australia in 1820 – the Australian Social Lodge. Since this time the Craft in Australia has gone from strength to strength and Australian Freemasons have made notable contributions to Australian history through: exploration (Hamilton Hume and Matthew Flinders), charitable pursuits (since 1834), aviation (Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith), sporting pursuits (Sir Donald Bradman, Sir James (Jim) Hardy and John Treloar) and in wartimes (16 Australian Freemasons have been recipients  of the Victoria Cross). And let’s not forget the Freemasons’ iconic contributions to Australian culture, including Vegemite, Aeroplane Jelly, Milo, and Peter’s Ice Cream.

The soon to be published account of Freemasonry in Australia: It’s No Secret - Real Men Wear Aprons gives a comprehensive understanding of the origins, organisation, principles and modern developments of the Craft.
